According to the Hindu Mythology, it is considered that the God of death, Yamraj, had visited his lovable sister named Yami (Yamuna) at this special day. His sister welcomed him by aarti and tilak ceremony. She offered him a garland and special dishes including sweets to eat. He had returned her sister a unique gift as a symbol of his love and care towards her sister. At that day Yamraj had declared that the brother who would receive tilak and aarti by their sister, he would never be frightened. That’s why the same day is called as the Yama Dwitiya.
According to another story, Hindu Lord Krishna had returned to his sister, Subhadra, after killing the demon king Narakasur where he was welcomed by his sister with tilak, aarti, sweets and flowers.
प्रस्तावना - दीपावली हिन्दुओं का सबसे बड़ा त्योहार है और पांच दिवसीय त्योहार के पांचवे दिन मनाया जाता है, भाई दूज का पर्व। भाई दूज को यम द्वितीया भी कहा जा ता है। भाई दूज का पर्व भाई-बहन के रिश्ते पर आधारित पर्व है, जिसे बड़ी श्रद्धा और परस्पर प्रेम के साथ मनाया जाता है। रक्षाबंधन के बाद, भाईदूज ऐसा दूसरा त्योहार है, जो भाई बहन के अगाध प्रेम को समर्पित है।
कैसे मनाते हैं - भाई दूभाई दूज का पर्व दीपावली के तीसरे दिन मनाया जाता है। इस दिन विवाहिता बहनें भाई बहन अपने भाई को भोजन के लिए अपने घर पर आमंत्रित करती है, और गोबर से भाई दूज परिवार का निर्माण कर, उसका पूजन अर्चन कर भाई को प्रेम पूर्वक भोजन कराती है। बहन अपने भाई को तिलक लगाकर, उपहार देकर उसकी लम्बी उम्र की कामना करती है। भाई दूर से जुड़ी कुछ मान्यताएं हैं जिनके आधार पर अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में इसे अलग-अलग तरह ये मनाया जाता है।
भाई दूज की कथा - सूर्यदेव की पत्नी छाया की कोख से यमराज तथा यमुना का जन्म हुआ। यमुना अपने भाई यमराज से स्नेहवश निवेदन करती थी कि वे उसके घर आकर भोजन करें। लेकिन यमराज व्यस्त रहने के कारण यमुना की बात को टाल जाते थे।कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया को यमुना अपने द्वार पर अचानक यमराज को खड़ा देखकर हर्ष-विभोर हो गई। प्रसन्नचित्त हो भाई का स्वागत-सत्कार किया तथा भोजन करवाया। इससे प्रसन्न होकर यमराज ने बहन से वर मांगने को कहा।तब बहन ने भाई से कहा कि आप प्रतिवर्ष इस दिन मेरे यहां भोजन करने आया करेंगे तथा इस दिन जो बहन अपने भाई को टीका करके भोजन खिलाए उसे आपका भय न रहे। यमराज 'तथास्तु' कहकर यमपुरी चले गए। ऐसी मान्यता है कि जो भाई आज के दिन यमुना में स्नान करके पूरी श्रद्धा से बहनों के आतिथ्य को स्वीकार करते हैं उन्हें तथा उनकी बहन को यम का भय नहीं रहता।

It reunites and renews the relationship and love of brothers and sisters when all the members of the family get together to celebrate it. There is a sweet dish in the Maharashtra known as the basundi poori or kheerni poori.
This festival brings a lot of happiness, affection and warmth between the relationship of brother and sister. This festival is a way to present the love and care of brothers and sisters to each other. Five betel nuts and betel leaves are placed at the brother’s had by their sisters. Prayer is done by the sisters by pouring water on their hands.
